Oral health care is a strong indicator of your overall health. X-rays are used to detect damage and decay that is not visible during a routine dental exam.
Why Are Dental X-Rays a Necessity?
Dental x-rays are used to identify areas of tooth decay, infections under the gums and bone loss. They also aid in the identification and severity of periodontal disease. Dental x-rays also assist the dentist in preparing teeth for restorations, placing implants, fabricating dentures, braces, and other dental procedures.
Routine dental x-rays can help detect oral problems in their earliest stages before problems get to severe and more invasive treatment is needed. Finding and treating dental problems early can potentially save you time, money and unnecessary discomfort. Dental x-rays are particularly helpful for children so that we can determine the location of your child’s permanent teeth and whether future orthodontic treatment is needed.
On average the dentist or hygienist will update dental x-rays on an annual basis. However, some patients may need dental x-rays more frequently. If you are a new patient, dental x-rays are an essential part of your examination to establish a baseline of your mouths overall condition and are used to assist in the development of treatment plans.
Safety of Radiation Exposure
Dental x–rays are safe, yet they do emit low levels of radiation during exposure. Techniques and tools have been designed to limit the bodies exposure to radiation. Here at Contemporary Dentistry we use digital radiographs which emit the lowest level of radiation possible. Radiation exposure is measured in millirem (mrem). On average the typical person receives about 620 mrm a year from natural and man-made sources. One single digital x-ray emits about 0.1 mrem of radiation which is equivalent to less than one day in the sun.
